DILI, 16 february 2023 (TATOLI) – The President of the Republic, José Ramos Horta, paid a courtesy visit to the U.S. Navy’s ship ‘USS John P. Murtha (LPD26).
The one-week visit of the ship to Timor-Leste is to support the joint military exercises called “Cooperation Afloat and Readiness Training (CARAT)” from 10 to 15 february, 2023.
President Horta said that the US Navy has been in very good cooperation with the Timorese National Defense Force (F-FDTL): “This US Navy ship is very special because it carries US Army equipment, including helicopters.”
“In terms of our security cooperation with the US, the US Navy continues to support the development of our Navy component,” Horta said during his visit to the USS John P. Murtha (LPD26).
The Head of State said it is necessary for Timor-Leste to continue training its soldiers and police officers.
“Despite experiencing various difficulties over the past 20 years, great efforts have been made to modernize our armed forces and police. We have so far seen significant improvements in these two security institutions,” Horta said.
The US Navy presence in Timor-Leste not only trained and supported the F-FDTL but also conducted other essential activities such as the rehabilitation of schools and clinics.
