DILI, 16 february 2023 (TATOLI) – The Government today extended its solidarity to the victims of Cyclone Gabrielle which claimed four lives and left thousands homeless.

“New Zealand has been under a state of national emergency since the cyclone hit the country on february 14 with torrential rains and winds,” said a Government statement, on thursday.

The cyclone caused flooding, landslides, and enormous destruction to houses, roads, and many other physical infrastructures.

The government spokesperson, Minister Fidélis Magalhães said: “We extend our condolences to families who lost their loved ones and salute the rescue and search team who remain determined to search for survivors and support the affected populations.

Cyclone Gabrielle caused at least four deaths, including a child, while more than 10,000 people had to be evacuated from their homes and more than 225,000 people were left without power and telecommunications.

According to the New Zealand authorities, the tropical cyclone caused gusts of up to 140 kilometers per hour, a level of rainfall of about 200 milliliters in a short period, and waves of eleven meters high.

As the country is still dealing with the effects of the cyclone, last night a 6.0 magnitude of earthquake hit the coast of the North Island, near the capital Wellington, with no reports of damage or casualties so far.
