Court of Appeal to resume operation of mobile courts in april

DILI, 21 february 2023 (TATOLI) – The President of the Courts of Appeal, Deolindo dos Santos revealed that the work of the mobile courts would resume in april.

The work of the mobile courts in the municipalities had been suspended since october 2022 due to technical difficulties.

“We suspended the operation of the mobile courts due to some technical difficulties. The Superior Council of the Judiciary (SJC) would evaluate all the work of the mobile courts including the monthly reports of the judges. So, we would resume the activities of the mobile courts in april this year,” Santos told reporters at his office in Dili, today.

Earlier, Santos said that the purpose of the suspension of the mobile courts is to allow the SJC to discuss the improvement of some technical issues and also mechanisms to control the work of the courts.

He said the mobile courts have been well implemented in two municipalities, including Viqueque, and Baucau.

The mobile court was initially established in 2008 to help communities access justice, especially for those living in rural areas.

“The purpose of the mobile court is to accelerate the trials of the pending cases in the municipalities, and to help our people who live in the rural areas of the municipalities of Baucau, Suai, and Viqueque,” he said.
