DILI, 27 february 2023 (TATOLI) – The Chinese government through the World Food Program (WFP) has distributed super cereal to the Ministry of Health (MOH) to be stored at the Timor-Leste’s Medical and Pharmaceutical Agency (SAMES) to combat malnutrition among women and children.
Super Cereal is a supplement-fortified blend, rich in proteins, vitamins, and minerals and effective in treating malnutrition.
WFP’s representative in Timor-Leste, Cecilia Garzon said that 64 tons of super cereal will be distributed to three municipalities, Bobonaro, Aileu, and Manufahi.
“The super cereal will be distributed to the three municipalities to combat malnutrition among pregnant mothers and children,” Garzon told reporters at the handover ceremony held at the SAMES warehouse in Dili.
He said WFP will look forward to supporting the other 11 municipalities in the future.
Meanwhile, the Economic Adviser of the Chinese Embassy in Timor-Leste, Geng Weixia said: “Chinese government is committed to continuing supporting Timor-Leste in the future, such as in the sectors of health, education, clean water, and especially malnutrition.”
“Mothers and children in the three municipalities will receive super cereals to fight malnutrition,” he said.
In addition, SAMES director Santana Martins said that SAMES would ensure proper storage of the super cereal to be distributed to the communities in good conditions.
“Martins thanked the Chinese government and WFP for supporting Timor-Leste in combating malnutrition,” Martins concluded.
