UNICEF and MoEYS held the first ACETL meeting to discuss the quality of  education  in Timor – Leste

DILI, 28 february 2023 (TATOLI)- United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) and the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports (MoEYS) today held the first workshop of Acção Conjunta da Educação em Timor – Leste (ACETL) to discuss the quality of education in Timor – Leste.

UNICEF Representative to Timor-Leste, Bilal Durrani who is also a Co-chair of ACETL, said, this first meeting of ACETL is very important to share the idea with all the Director General of Education and also the Directors of Education Municipal to discuss actively ACETL.

“I am pleased to note that the Director Generals and the National Directors were actively engaged in discussion with UNICEF in finalizing the agenda for today ‘s meeting and thank the DGs and Directors for their commitment,’’ Bilal Durrani told reporters at the City8 Has – Laran, Dili on tuesday.

Durrani, highlighted in the last meeting of the ACETL in March 2022 that UNICEF and MoEYS agreed on three key action points: To have regular ACETL meetings with Minister at least twice a year, to review the technical working groups and have more frequent thematic discussion led by respective DGs, To Undertake a Joint Section Review of Education sector plan

“ I am aware that not much progress has been made on any of these, I hope in today ‘s meeting we can agree on a way forward for the three action points from our last meeting, I am also happy to note that today ‘s agenda includes agreement on Technical Working Groups which was one of the action points and it is important to proceed with the review as soon as possible with the focus on factors affecting the quality of education, so we as partners can agree on ways of supporting the Ministry of Education improve the quality of education in Timor – Leste,’’ he said.

At the same place the Minister of Education, Youth, and Sport, Armindo Maia, appreciated the first meeting of ACETL with the partner in 2023 to continue prioritizing the development of the quality of education in Timor – Leste.

“We have five important keys in the prioritizing of the quality of the education system in Timor – Leste, including the Educational infrastructure, Development of Curriculum, Training for capacity building for the teachers, Institutional Management, and Inclusive Education,’’ he said.

With these priority programs, MoEYS and UNICEF, today hold the ACETL meeting with all Director Generals (DGs) and the National Director including the Director of Education of all municipalities to contribute constructive ideas to develop the quality of the education system in Timor – Leste.
