Govt initiates law for tourism activities and creation of tourism authority

DILI, 01 march 2023 (TATOLI) – The Minister of Tourism, Commerce and Industry, José Lucas do Carmo da Silva, gave a presentation on the political-legislative options underlying the legislative initiative to create a Law for Tourism Activities and underlying the initiative to create a Timor-Leste Tourism Authority.

“The initiative to create a Basic Law for Tourism Activities aims to establish a tourism system, in supply and demand, with the definition of the basis for organizing, monitoring, supervising, promoting and fostering tourism activities,” Minister of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, Fidelis Manuel Leite Magalhães said in a press conference at the Governmental Palace, in Dili, today.

He said the law will apply to tourism activities of the public and private sectors, domestic and international tourists, residents, service providers, and suppliers of tourism products and services, as well as other tourism stakeholders.

“Meanwhile, the Timor-Leste Tourism Authority, overseen by the member of the Government responsible for tourism, shall be responsible for the implementation of the tourism policy and strategic plan, with the purpose of promoting, empowering, coordinating, monitoring and developing the private and public sector, contributing to the promotion and strengthening of tourism and the economic development of the country,” he said.

Last month, the Council of Ministers (CoM) approved the National Strategic Plan 2023-2030 for the Development of Tourism in Timor-Leste (PENDT 2023-2030).

The PENDT is to develop Timor-Leste as a unique tourism destination in Asia with responsible, sustainable, and inclusive tourism.
