Five Timorese prosecutors attend judicial capacity building in CEJ, Portugal

DILI, 14 april 2023 (TATOLI)- Five (5) Timorese Public Prosecutors (TL) will participate in capacity building at the Portuguese Center for Judicial Studies (CEJ) in Portugal for three months.

The Attorney General, Alfonso Lopez informed that the five prosecutors were representatives of the Baucau, Covalima, Oecusse, and Dili prosecutors as well as the Corruption Eradication Headquarters.

“They are departing to Portugal to have three months of training in CEJ. It is known as an internationally recognized training. Our prosecutors will take part in complementary training for the period April 17 to June 7 or three months,” explained Alfonso Lopez at the Portuguese Embassy in TL, this Thursday.

He added that the Timor-Leste judiciary system in collaboration with CEJ Portugal Center of Excellence in Prosecutor Training in Portugal and Europe is promoting the First Edition of the Training Program for Prosecutors of the Public Prosecutors Office of TL.

Representatives of the Portuguese Ambassador in TL, Cooperation Attache, and Cristina Faustina said the training was specially designed with Timor-Leste’s laws and legal system in mind which included a theoretical phase at the CEJ, followed by a practical phase, at the Courts and the Portuguese Public Prosecutor’s service.

“This training strengthens the technical and institutional capacity of the Prosecutor’s Office in carrying out criminal acts, in the direction of criminal investigations, in the promotion and implementation of crime prevention measures, in representing the interests of the State, and in the promotion of State Law,” he said.

During the event, the Representative of the European Union, Ramon Reigada, emphasized that for the European Union, the training of public prosecutors is an important part of the success of the EU’s support for the Timorese people.

“This is the first Prosecutor to benefit from training at CEJ Portugal, and we hope that the PFMO and CEJ will still be able to organize a second training,” said Reigada.

The CEJ’s commitment to training Public Prosecutors in Timor-Leste is recognized by all and guarantees that the training is structured and implemented taking into account the law and the realities of Timor-Leste.

“To the five judges who will take part in this training action, I wish a great success in this learning process. We hope to contribute to strengthening the actions of the Prosecutor’s Office and upholding the rule of law in TL,” he concluded

It is known that this capacity building is supported through the OSAN POVU NIAN, JERE HO DIA’K program (PFMO).
