DILI, 15 may 2023 (TATOLI) – Westen Sahara and the National University of Timor Lorosa’e (UNTL), through the Faculty of Social Sciences, held a seminar to discuss the efforts of Western Sahara for self-determination.

The Ambassador of Western Sahara in Timor-Leste, Boibat Malainim Boibuat said, Western Shara is working hard to bring independence to people in Western Sahara. It has a political strategy of the Polisario Front to obtain recognition of international law and the self-determination of Western Sahara.

“We take this seminar to deeply discuss the Western Sahara people’s self-determination for freedom. We thank Timor-Leste’s Academy, especially the UNTL that has organized this event,’’ Western Sahara ambassador Boibuat said in his remarks in Caicoli, Wednesday

Boibuat said the country’s struggle is very similar to the struggle of the Timorese people for independence:” Timor-Leste is aware of knowing the value of freedom, suffering, and self-determination of our people who are fighting for self-determination against the occupation of Morocco for our territory since 1975,”

The ambassador points out that the strategy for self-determination is based on the United Nations front, the legal front to prevent the illegal exploitation of the country’s natural resources, diplomacy and strengthening of the position of the people of Sahara, denunciation of human rights violations by invaders and the armed front of struggle for national liberation

Director for Center of Peace, Antero Benedito said the seminar is an act of solidarity of the Timorese for the illegal occupation of human rights violations and exploitation of natural resources that the people of Western Sahara are facing.

Benedito stressed the importance of the seminar as a means of raising awareness and encouraging students and future activists of international relations to support the will of the people of Western Sahara regarding the international recognition and independence of Western Sahara.

Meanwhile, in 1966, the UN allowed the population to freely exercise their right to self-determination, however, in 1975, the territory was illegally invaded by the Moroccan military, which hindered the referendum in the country.
