Timor-Leste host the ARF of DOD with 20 ARF states members

DILI, 30 may 2023 (TATOLI)- Timor – Leste and Indonesia today co-chair the dialogue of the ASEAN Regional Forum Defense Official’s Dialogue (ARF-DOD) and the ASEAN Regional Forum Inter-Sessional Support Group Meeting on Confidence Building Measures and Preventive Diplomacy (ARF ISG on CBMs and PD) from the 30th to 31st of May of 2023, in Dili, Timor-Leste.

The Director General of the Ministry of Defense Force, Nuno Carvalho do Santos, said Timor – Leste had already become a member of ARF since 2005 together with the 27 countries and today as the co-chair together with Indonesia to held the ARF dialogue forum during two days from 30 to 31 of may 2023 in Timor – Leste.

” The ARF – DOD and ARF -ISG on CBMs and PD will together to discuss how the defense sector can support the Blue economy, emerging security challenges resulting from global warming impacts, enhancing the region resilience post Covid-19 pandemic and exploring wider to achieve sustainable peace and prosperity in the region of ASEAN and Pacific island including world globally,” the Director General of the Ministry of Timor – Leste’s Defense Force, Nuno Carvalho do Santos told reporters at Novo Turismo Hotel in Lecidere, Dili on tuesday.

Nuno Carvalho do Santos added this ARF meeting also includes fostering open discussions and promoting collaboration in defense-related matters.

Under the theme of “Peace, Prosperity and Security”, Whereas, ARF ISG on CBMs and PD participants will exchange their views on the regional security development; report on outcomes of the work of ARF ISGs and other activities, as well as plan for the next 2023-2024’s Inter-Sessional Year.

At the same place, the Director of International Defense Cooperation of the Republic of Indonesia Brigen TNI Steve Parengkuan said Indonesia will be ready to support Timor- Leste to enhance the bilateral cooperation in the area of security and the diplomacy policy to strengthen the stability of peace in the ASEAN region.

” We are ready to work together to promote peace and in the region globally and Indonesia is ready to support Timor – Leste in defense and security including all the bilateral cooperation which had been done in the regional, Pacific, and the world globally,” he said.

The ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) was established in 1994 and serves as a forum for dialogue and consultation among participating countries on issues related to politics and security in the region, intending to minimize threats to regional stability and security. The Forum is comprised of 27 countries namely: Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Australia, Canada, China, the European Union, India, Japan, New Zealand, the Republic of Korea, Russia, the United States of America, Timor-Leste, Papua New Guinea, Bangladesh, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Mongolia, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, including ASEAN Secretariat (ASEC).

Timor-Leste joined the ASEAN Regional Forum in 2005 and this will be the first time for Timor-Leste to co-chair this DOD and ISG meeting.

More than 80 Delegates from 20 ARF Member States, the ASEAN Secretariat, and the European Union will participate in these two-days meeting.
