CNRT and PD discuss swearing in of new MPs with President Horta

DILI, 07 june 2023 (TATOLI) – The National Congress for Timorese Reconstruction (CNRT) and the Democratic Party (PD) met with the President of the Republic, José Ramos Horta, to discuss the swearing-in ceremony of the new Members of Parliament and formation of the next government.

After the meeting, the President of CNRT, Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão, told reporters that the swearing-in of the new Members of Parliament would take place on june 22 and that the nomination of the Speaker of the National Parliament and the President of the Parliamentary Committees would occur on the following day.

He said that after the inauguration of new MPs, the Head of State will formally invite the Prime Minister designated by the party with the most votes to discuss the formation of the government.

Gusmão congratulated the Timorese people, especially the youth, for having shown political maturity during the parliamentary elections.

At the same place, the President of PD, Mariano ‘Assanami’ Sabino, said they were discussing with President Horta the date of the swearing-in ceremony of the new MPs and the formation of the IX Constitutional Government.

“During the meeting, we conveyed to President Horta, the intention of PD and CNRT to move forward with the formation of the next government,” Assanami said.

He said that PD and CNRT will be invited again by the President of the Republic to jointly discuss the formation of the IX Constitutional Government.

On tuesday (07/06), the Speaker of the National Parliament, Aniceto Guterres, together with the leaders of the political parties’ benches in the National Parliament, decided to hold the swearing-in ceremony for the new MPs on June 22.

According to the official announcement of the parliamentary election results by the Court of Appeal, on monday (05/06), CNRT was declared the winner of the elections to form a coalition government with PD, which won six seats. Meanwhile, the three outgoing ruling parties only won 28 seats, including 19 from FRETILIN, five from KHUNTO, and four from the PLP.
