DILI, 26 june 2023 (TATOLI)—Timor-Leste won another five medals from the 2023 Special Olympic World Games competition which was held in Berlin, Germany ended last week (25/06).
“In the last competition on Sunday (25/06) Timor-Leste received an additional bronze medal, claimed by Oscar Alexandrinho who won third place in the 400 meters, Level B, Division 3, Men which was competed by eight countries,” said the official website of the Secretariat of State for Youth and Sports (SSYS) which is accessed by Tatoli.
The statement also wrote that the five medals claimed during the competition included two gold medals, one silver medal, and two bronze medals.
“The athletes who awarded the medals were Norberta da Cruz dos Santos (1 gold, 1 silver), Felizarda da Costa (1 gold, 1 bronze), and Oscar Alexandrinho (1 bronze),” it says.
The 2023 Special Olympic World Games competition was held in Berlin, Germany. The Special Olympics is held for nine days, from 17 to 25 June 2023. This marks the first time Germany has hosted it. Berlin, Germany was selected as the host city on November 13, 2018, at the Global Athlete Congress in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
The Event was described as, competitions that is full of emotion, high-class sports, and lively parties. Everyone experienced their highlight and had an unforgettable experience.
“On the eighth and final day of competition, our athletes returned to action in five sports and gave their best until the end,” wrote the statement.
The Special Olympics World Games are the world’s largest inclusive sports event. Thousands of athletes with intellectual disabilities compete together in 26 sports. Nine days of exciting and inspiring competition, by athletes and for athletes from 17 to 25 June 2023.
The event was attended by 6,500 athletes from 190 countries, 18,000 volunteers from 126 countries, 3,000 coaches and support staff, 100,000 tickets sold for the competition, 4002 medals (1-3 winners), 6,670 ribbons (4-8 winners), 71 translators for Common Language and 1,100 referees.
