DILI,07 july 2023 (TATOLI)– The United States Embassy in Timor -Leste celebrate the 247 years of the U.S. anniversary of independence in Dili.

The Celebration of the U.S 247 Independence Anniversary was attended by the President of the Republic, José Ramos Horta, other Diplomatic corps, and another important guest.

Charge d’ Affaires of the United States Embassy, Tom Daley, addressed the Ceremony by welcoming all the present guests at the U.S. Anniversary and congratulating all the fellow Americans.

“I would like to warmly welcome you to the U.S. Embassy’s Independence Day ceremony. To my fellow Americans, Happy Independence Day! we celebrate the 247th anniversary of the founding of the United States of America. As many of you noticed we are also here to celebrate America’s national parks,” said Tom Daley.

To Daley, like any democracy, the history of the U.S. is a story of resilience to fundamental democracy that define the value of the country.

“Like any democracy, ours is a story of resilience. It is the story of the re-dedication by every generation to the fundamental democratic values that define our country. And It has required a continuous renewal of our commitment to strengthen democratic institutions, root out corruption, build consensus, and reject political violence wherever it may take root,” Tom Daley said in his speech at the U.S. Embassy Dili, Today.

Tom Daley outlined these democratic values are – without a doubt – the most important bond underpinning the enduring partnership between the United States and Timor-Leste. It is therefore fitting to applaud the Timorese leaders here – past, present, and future – for your commitment to strengthening Timor-Leste’s democracy.

On this occasion, U.S-Chage Affairs also congratulated on a successful election and the formation of a new government where Timor-Leste has emerged as a democratic lighthouse in Southeast Asia and the Indo-Pacific region.

“That is a testament to the commitment of many of you here tonight who are working to keep the torch of liberty burning for the Timorese people and for generations to come”

Tom Daley highlighted what real democratization should be; People who are working tirelessly to ensure free and fair elections that enable citizens to respect the outcomes of the democratic process, People who are building one of the freest media environments in the world, where anyone can speak their minds and hold those in power accountable, People who are taking action on climate change risks and building resilience to reduce environmental vulnerabilities and People who are relentlessly fostering a more inclusive society for every citizen in all of their diversity. Ultimately, it all comes down to people.

” Our enduring partnership is guided by our commitment to investing in the Timorese people – Timor-Leste’s greatest strategic resource. These investments often take time to see results, but they are the investments that matter”

Looking ahead, the U.S. will continue to expand those investments in partnership with the Government of Timor-Leste and respond to the aspirations of the Timorese people.

Following the Summit for Democracy, the U.S. is investing in civil society leaders to strengthen their advocacy for the needs of the Timorese people through USAID support.

He said: “In the aftermath of Russia’s brutal and unprovoked invasion of Ukraine – which has caused the greatest food security crisis of our time, we are partnering with Timorese farmers to boost production of nutritious foods so that no one has to live in fear of going hungry”

“With the construction of a sanitation and wastewater treatment system in Dili, children will grow up better able to realize their innate potential, free from the threat of debilitating water-borne diseases thanks to the Millennium Challenge Corporation. Besides, for the first time, F-FDTL pilots will take to the sky in a U.S.-provided Cessna to safeguard Timor-Leste’s hard-won sovereignty and protect its abundant natural resources,”

He emphasized that With U.S. training and material support, PNTL officers are strengthening their ability to stop transnational crimes and protect vulnerable Timorese people.

On the other hand, Timorese students across the country are learning to read and write in clean, modern, and safe schools built by the Navy Seabees.

More Timorese than ever is pursuing a world-class higher education in the United States through the Fulbright program as a result of our growing higher education partnership.

Young Timorese leaders are also connecting with their peers across Southeast Asia to build skills to tackle regional challenges – a reflection of our commitment to Timor-Leste’s regional integration.

Essential to regional integration and ASEAN accession is English U.S. increasing English education opportunities for those who need it most through the work of Peace Corp Volunteers and others.

For each investment in people: “There are countless others who have benefited from our partnership – people from diverse social, economic, and cultural backgrounds – and every corner of Timor-Leste. These impacts grow into transformational progress over time. The United States is committed to working together to expand our efforts to deliver opportunities for the Timorese people,”

” Looking ahead, I am inspired to think about what we can accomplish through our partnership, as fellow democracies committed to building a brighter, more prosperous, and more secure future for our citizens” he concluded.

At the same time, the President of the Republic José Ramos Horta on behalf of the Government and the people of Timor – Leste congratulated the U.S s Independence Day and thanked the U.S which had been supporting Timor – Leste in all development sectors and asked the U.S to continue to strengthen the bilateral cooperation in the future.
