SEFOPE send 624 Timorese workers to South Korea

DILI, 03 august 2023 ( TATOLI)- Secretary of State for Vocational Training and Employment (SEFOPE), Rojerio Araujo Mendonca, informed that from January to August 2023 SEFOPE has sent more than 624 Timorese workers to work in South Korea.

“The 624 Timorese workers are currently working in South Korea,” Rojerio Araujo Mendonca told reporters at Timor-Lodge, Dili, Friday.

He said, every year the South Korean Government and SEFOPE have provided 500 quotas for Timorese workers but this year Timor Leste has sent Timorese workers over the target: “Due to the demand for workers, this year more than 500 workers were sent to South Korea. and more workers will be sent to South Korea in the future,” he said.

Following this situation, Mendonca encouraged Timorese to prepare for future jobs: ” Timorese should prepare themselves by learning Korean and participating in training to improve their language knowledge and other skills to work in South Korea in the future, ” he added.

According to Mendonca, sending workers abroad is not only to support the family economy and the country’s economy but also to learn new experiences and new work skills to be applied in Timor-Leste, after returning from South Korea.

So far Timor – Leste through SEFOPE has sent more than 5,500 Timorese to South Korea and currently more than 3,700 Timorese workers are still actively working in South Korea.

In addition, Timorese workers in South Korea have annual transfers of more than $40 million to support their families in Timor-Leste and contribute to economic diversification in Timor-Leste.
