JAKARTA, 07 september 2023 (TATOLI) – Timorese Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão met with Hassanal Bolkiah, the Sultan, and the Prime Minister of Brunei to discuss bilateral cooperation in various sectors, including health, education, and petroleum and minerals.
The bilateral meeting took place at Plenary Hall, Jakarta Convention Center (JCC), on the sideline of the 43rd ASEAN Summit under the Chairmanship of the Republic of Indonesia, with the theme “ASEAN Matters: Epicentrum of Growth.”
Prime Minister Gusmão said that Brunei is the second developed country in ASEAN, after Singapore, adding the country has so far developed good ties with Timor-Leste which is important to the country’s development.
During the bilateral meeting, Sultan Bolkiah expressed his contentment and invited Prime Minister Gusmão to visit Brunei in the future.
Gusmão said that he would speak to the President of the Republic, José Ramos Horta, to invite Sultan Bolkiah to participate in Timor-Leste’s Restoration of Independence Day on 20 May, 2024.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Gusmão and his Vietnamese counterpart, Pham Minh Chinh also discussed the possibilities for future co-operation between the two countries in the agricultural sector with a view to increasing Timor-Leste’s food production.
Gusmão thanked Vietnam, especially the Vietnamese company Viettel Telecom for its investment and operation in Timor-Leste.
