President Horta to speak at the 78th Session of the UN General Assembly

DILI, 15 september 2023 (TATOLI) – The President of the Republic and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, José Ramos-Horta, will be in New York from september 17th to September 23rd, 2023, to represent Timor-Leste and deliver a statement at the 78th Session of the United Nations General Assembly that will take place from September to December 2023.

World leaders gather in New York for the opening of the 78th session of the General Assembly and to engage in the annual high-level General Debate under the theme, “Rebuilding Trust and Reigniting Global Solidarity: Accelerating Action on the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals towards peace, prosperity, progress, and sustainability for all.”

The President of Timor-Leste will deliver the national statement at the General Debate of the 78th Session of the UN General Assembly on 21st September 2023, to share the progress that Timor-Leste has achieved in political and economic development in the last few years.

The Head of State will also participate in the roundtable leader dialogue on Sustainable Development entitled “Building Resilience and Leave No One Behind.” The President will also attend a reception hosted by the President of the United States of America, Joseph Robinette Biden Jr.

President Ramos-Horta will also deliver a keynote address on “Investing in Food Security: Innovative Solutions to Address the Hunger Crisis”, at the United Nations Headquarters. 

President Horta will also participate in a side event organized by Thailand’s Mission on “Fostering Partnership for Our Common Future: Enhancing Multi-Stakeholder Partnership to Accelerate the SDGs in ASEAN, and in the World Health Organization’s (WHO) organized conference on “Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable Disease”.

The President will then participate in the High-Level Side Event on Increasing Global Solidarity, Sustaining Peace, and Building Resilience in Countries Affected by Conflict and Fragility, organized by the g7+” on 22nd September 2023. This event is co-hosted by Timor-Leste and Sierra Leone, the latter being the current chair of the g7+.

The Head of State will also address a side event organized by Millennium Corporation Challenge on High Impact Investment. Timor-Leste is one of the beneficiaries of the MCC fund. 

In July 2022, Timor-Leste and the United States, through the Millennium Corporation Challenge, signed the Compact Agreement. The US provides $420 million (grant) to Timor-Leste for two programs on Waste Water Treatment and Drainage and Education Program for Secondary School Teachers training.

Apart from these sideline events, the head of state will hold multilateral and bilateral meetings. His Excellency the President concludes the high-level activities in New York on 24th September 2023.
