EU and WV-TL launch the POWER Project to support women

DILI, 28 september 2023 (TATOLI) – The European Union (EU) and World Vision-Timor-Leste (WV-TL), together with the Fundasaun Esperanza Enclave Oe-cusse (FEEO) and Forum Komunikasi Untuk Perempuan Timor Lorosa’e (FOKUPERS), participated in a three-day start-up workshop to launch the Promotion of Women through Economic Empowerment and Rights (POWER) project.

The POWER project aims to support women and vulnerable people in all their diversity to fully enjoy and exercise their equal economic, labor, and social rights in Timor-Leste.

“It will also increase women’s skills, access to financial services, market information, and business relationships needed to grow their businesses and livelihoods through relevant entrepreneurial training,” revealed WV-TL’s press release accessed by the TATOLI today.

According to the note, it will take a holistic approach to target the most vulnerable women in Covalima and Oe-cusse municipalities.

The POWER project will work at the household level to promote greater acceptance and inclusion of women in economic activities and improve and support healthy relationships with families, supporting gender equality and non-violence through a balanced share of care and household responsibilities.

In addition, it will galvanize multi-stakeholder partnerships that celebrate women’s economic empowerment. Through this approach, the POWER project is expected to benefit over 8,000 people directly in Covalima and Oe-cusse.

The project is funded by the European Union, which is providing funding up to EUR 1,500,000.

It is known that the three-year project, starting on September 1, 2023, will be implemented through a consortium including the lead applicant, World Vision Australia (WVA), and co-applicants, World Vision Timor-Leste (WVTL), Fundasaun Esperanza Enclave Oe-cusse (FEEO), and Forum Komunikasi Untuk Perempuan Timor Lorosa’e (FOKUPERS). Each of the partners in Timor-Leste has a strong presence in the country, with WVTL and FOKUPERS having a presence for over 25 years and FEEO in Oe-cusse since 2009.
