DILI, 03 october 2023 (TATOLI) – The Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Francisco da Costa Monteiro represents Timor-Leste to  attend the Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition and Conference (ADIPEC) held from 2-5 October.

Minister Monteiro’s attendance came upon the gracious invitation of the Minister of Energy and Infrastructure of the United Arab Emirates, Suhail Mohamed Al Mazrouei.

The significant event was under the patronage of the Sheik Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the President of the United Arab Emirates.

Throughout the conference, Minister Monteiro had the privilege of representing Timor-Leste in various high-profile forums and roundtable discussions.

There were discussions welcomed by over 10 esteemed ministers from regions such as Asia, Europe, Africa, and both South and North America. Furthermore, heads of prominent international organizations, including OPEC, were present to engage in discussions under Chatham House rules.

A central theme of these discussions revolved around the importance of energy transition for economic development, growth, and socioeconomic advancement.

Minister Monteiro’s interventions underscored the significance of recognizing natural gas as a crucial part of the energy transition due to its low carbon emissions.

He emphasized that countries like Timor-Leste should continually explore and develop natural gas so it can considerably contribute to the nation’s socioeconomic structure and encourage a rapid transition to lower carbon emissions.

Minister Monteiro acknowledged the need for pacing adjustments relative to the socioeconomic construct of individual countries.

In the opening speech of the event, Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, COP28 President-Designate and UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, eloquently stated: “Today at ADIPEC from Abu Dhabi, I say with full confidence: this industry can and must help drive the solutions. For too long, this industry has been viewed as part of the problem, that it’s not doing enough and in some cases even blocking progress. This is your opportunity to show the world that, in fact, you are central to the solution.”
