Horta calls for focus on Early Childhood Development and Human Capital

DILI, 14 november 2023 (TATOLI) – President José Ramos-Horta called for a renewed focus on early childhood development and human capital.  

Speaking at the event, President Ramos-Horta said that investing in early childhood education and nutrition is essential for the country’s future prosperity.

“By providing our youngest citizens with a strong foundation in early childhood education and ensuring their access to nutritious food is essential for the country’s future prosperity,” President Horta made the comments at the launch of the Inter-Ministerial Taskforce on Social Affairs and Timor-Leste Human Capital Review, in Dili, on tuesday.

Horta also acknowledged the challenges posed by stunting and chronic malnutrition, pledging the government’s unwavering commitment to combat these issues.

“In 2024, the Government will launch a comprehensive program to address stunting, and food insecurity to ensure that every child, every pregnant mother, and every breastfeeding mother has access to the nourishment they need to thrive,” he affirmed.

The Head of State also raised the importance of investing in human capital, saying that it is the key to unlocking the country’s true potential.

The launch of the Inter-Ministerial Taskforce is a significant step forward in the government’s efforts to improve the lives of Timorese people.

The Taskforce will work to coordinate and strengthen the government’s response to social and human capital development challenges.
