Parliament approves Horta’s State visit to attend COP28 in UAE

DILI, 22 november 2023 (TATOLI) – The National Parliament on tuesday approved the State visit of the President of the Republic, José Ramos Horta, to the United Arab Emirates.

Parliament approved the visit 39 votes in favor, 20 votes against, and one abstention.

“The State visit of President Horta to the United Arab Emirates has now been approved,” said House Speaker Maria Fernanda Lay during a plenary session, at the National Parliament, in Dili on tuesday.

The Head of State will attend the 28th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP28) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) which will take place in Dubai from november 30 to december 4.

Earlier, the Ambassador of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to Indonesia and Timor-Leste, Abdulla Salem Obaid Salem AlDhaheri, met with Timor-Leste’s Prime Minister, Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão, to discuss future cooperation of the two countries.

During the meeting, ambassador Salem handed over to the Prime Minister, the invitation letter from the United Arab Emirates, inviting Timor-Leste to participate in COP28. which will take place in the United Arab Emirates between 30 November and 4 december, 2023.

World leaders will be gathering in Dubai on a mission to curb climate change.

The upcoming COP28 is an important event for world leaders, politicians, experts, and a whole host of others to discuss the climate crisis on a global level.

The UN Climate Change Conference (the official name for climate Conferences of the Parties) has occurred every year since 1995.
