DILI, 29 november 2023 (TATOLI) – The authorities will organize public awareness of waste management in Dili to inform the public of the importance of proper waste management.
Herminio Moniz Ribeiro, the Director of Water and Sanitation of Dili Municipality said that the Authority of Dili Municipality is seeking to improve public awareness of waste management in order to encourage all citizens to support and participate in activities to keep Dili clean.
He said the Authority of Dili Municipality will collaborate with partners to organize the waste management campaign.
So far there is no serious established system of training or strengthening of public awareness for solving the problem of waste in Timor-Leste
“There is a lack of awareness among citizens on many matters regarding waste management. A Waste Management Public Awareness Program aims to achieve higher rates of reduction in the amount of waste disposed in land, water, and sea. Therefore, the campaign will help to increase awareness raising on waste management through communication campaigns,” said Ribeiro.
He added that raising awareness is a key part of environmental policy, saying environmentally friendly practices, and is especially important for international environmental issues.
Authorities of Dili Municipality have set up more than 300 waste disposal centers in Dili to help communities dispose of their waste properly.
“So, raising awareness activities for proper waste management will develop the knowledge and awareness needed to support more environmentally friendly practices across the country,” concluded Ribeiro.
