DILI, 19 december 2023 (TATOLI) – As part of the 50th anniversary celebrations of diplomatic relations between Japan and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão said his country respects the principles that ASEAN and Japan have upheld over the years, namely the principles of inclusiveness, mutual respect, commitment to shared prosperity, and the ASEAN Community Vision.

“We are inspired by the outcome of this partnership and look forward to contributing our unique perspectives to the shared vision of a harmonious and prosperous Southeast Asia. Timor-Leste applauds the new direction of cooperation between ASEAN and Japan and looks forward to actively participating and contributing to maintaining peace and stability in the region and strengthening economic and social cooperation with ASEAN and its partners, including Japan,” Prime Minister Gusmão said in a statement.

Gusmão said that Timor-Leste is ready to learn, engage, and make a significant contribution to the common goals that unite ASEAN countries with Japan.

“Although Timor-Leste is here as an observer, it remains committed to deepening its engagement with ASEAN. Our journey has just begun and we look forward to the day when we can contribute more actively to the dialogues and initiatives that define this dynamic region,” he said.

In this opportunity, Gusmão on behalf of the Government and the people of Timor-Leste thanked Japan for giving an opportunity to participate in the Summit to share the country’s preparation process for future membership of the organization. For Gusmão, diplomatic relations between Japan and ASEAN reflect “evidence of friendship in promoting peace, stability, and prosperity in the region”.

Meanwhile, Japan’s Prime Minister, Fumio Kishida, reaffirmed the Japanese government’s commitment to continue supporting Timor-Leste to contribute to the country’s development process.

The relationship between Timor-Leste and Japan has taken place over 20 years, and it’s necessary to strengthen cooperation to consolidate peace and respect for democratic principles and human rights.
