DILI, 05 january 2023 (TATOLI) – The process of hiring Timorese workers to be working in Brunei Darussalam has not yet been finalized because requires a data base system.
The National Director of Foreign Employment (DNEE) of the Secretary of State for Vocational Training and Employment (SoSVTE), João Correia Pereira said that SoSVTE is waiting for the database to be created in order to recruit and send workers to Brunei Darussalam.
He said that although Timor-Leste’s government has already signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Brunei Darussalam, some additional procedures are needed before the program can be implemented.
“The creation of a database is essential to help the government keep track of the workers. The process for sending Timorese workers to Australia or South Korea is different from Brunei Darussalam, each country has its own rules and regulation,” said Pereira in Becora, Dili.
He said that SoSVTE has already met with the Timorese Manpower Agency (TMA), the agency responsible for recruiting workers, to discuss the creation of the database system.
Last year, the Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Francisco Kalbuadi, and his Bruneian counterpart signed a memorandum of understanding that allowed Bruneian companies to employ Timorese workers in various areas.
The signing ceremony took place on the sidelines of a meeting between Timor-Leste’s President, José Ramos Horta, and the Sultan of Brunei Darussalam, Hassanal Bolkiah, at the Nurul Iman Palace in Bandar Seri Begawan.
Timor-Leste’s Ambassador to Brunei Darussalam, Abel Guterres, said that the country intended to hire 20,000 Timorese to work in various sectors.
The diplomat added that once the workers had been selected, the government would provide training in various areas to prepare the workers to be well-equipped with the necessary skills before they depart for Brunei.
