DILI, 05 June 2026 (TATOLI) – The President of the Republic, Jose Ramos-Horta met on Friday with the Argentine Ambassador, Gustavo Ricardo Coppa, at the Nicolau Lobato Presidential Palace to finalize the implementation of a new bilateral cooperation agreement.
Following an initiative launched by the President in 2025, the partnership officially restarts this month with a specialized medical training program.
A delegation of senior professors and the Dean from Argentina’s National University of Córdoba is set to arrive in Dili this Sunday to provide intensive training for Timorese doctors in public health, family care, and infectiology.
The medical cooperation will be conducted in three phases: an initial 48-hour intensive in-person course next week, followed by a series of virtual training sessions between Argentina and Timor-Leste.
The President also discussed a future third stage where Timorese medical professionals will travel to Argentina for direct clinical experience. This program marks the first significant technical exchange between the two nations in several years, signaling a renewed commitment to strengthening Timor-Leste’s healthcare capacity through international expertise.
In addition to health, the President and Ambassador Coppa explored future collaboration in the sports sector, specifically regarding football. Plans are currently being developed to bring Argentine players and technical experts to Timor-Leste next year to help develop local athletic talent.
Ambassador Coppa emphasized that while health and sports are the current priorities, both nations intend to broaden their cooperation into other fields as this diplomatic partnership continues to grow.
