DILI, 10 january 2024 (TATOLI) – The President of the Republic, José Ramos Horta, met on tuesday (09/01) with the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, to discuss the areas in which India can support Timor-Leste.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of the inauguration ceremony of the Vibrant Gujarat Global Trade Show 2024, located in Gandhinagar-Gujarat, India.
During the meeting, they discussed three areas in which India has expressed interest to support Timor-Leste in the future, including the Information Technology Institute, scholarships, and the renewable energy industry.
The expression of support is part of India’s commitment to strengthen bilateral ties with Timor-Leste.
In order to strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries, both leaders reiterated the importance of establishing India’s Embassy in Dili and Timor-Leste’s Embassy in New Delhi.
During the ASEAN-India meeting at the 43rd ASEAN Summit in september 2023 in Jakarta, Prime Minister Modi announced the decision to establish a permanent mission in Timor-Leste, reinforcing India’s commitment to its diplomatic relations with Timor-Leste.
At the meeting, Modi and Horta also touched on the importance of promoting peace and stability in the Pacific region.
Prime Minister Modi was grateful for the presence of the President of the Republic, José Ramos Horta, at 10th Vibrant Gujarat Summit 2024.
The Republic of India and Timor-Leste have been actively engaged in various sectors since the establishment of diplomatic relations between both countries on january 24, 2003.
