More than 850 Timorese workers will renew their passports in South Korea

DILI, 11 january 2024 (TAOLI) – The National Director of Foreign Employment (DNEE) of the Secretary of State for Vocational Training and Employment (SoSVTE), João Correira Pereira, informed that 867 Timorese working in South Korea, whose passports have expired, will have the opportunity to renew their passports in South Korea.

“Of the 4,822 Timorese currently working in South Korea, 867 have their passports expired and need to be renewed to continue working in South Korea,” Pereira told TATOLI.

The passport renewal process will be carried out by a joint team made up of the National Directorate of Registries and Notaries (NDRN) and SoSVTE.

The team left for South Korea on wednesday (10/01) and will arrive in Seoul on january 12th. The passport renewal process will take place from january 12 to 20 and the team will return on january 21. The team is expected to renew around 150 passports a day.

Timor-Leste Embassy in South Korea has called on workers whose passports have expired to renew their passports.

These workers are required to present their birth certificates, personal identity cards, and expired passports to renew their passports.

Since 2009, SoSVTE has sent more than 5,800 workers to South Korea to work in fisheries and factories, contributing more than US$43 million to the country.
