DILI, 12 january 2024 (TATOLI) – The Government of South Korea, through the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (MAFR) pledged to support Timor-Leste’s land greener plan.

The interest was expressed by the Minister of South Korea’s Forest Services, Nam Sung-hyun, in a meeting with the Prime Minister, Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão, at the Government Palace, in Dili.

“South Korea has remarkable experience in tree planting projects over the past five decades. Now, South Korea wants to support our tree planting program to achieve our goal of making our land greener,” said Prime Minister Gusmão.

He said that Timor-Leste’s Minister of Agriculture will first have to prepare the three-planting plan before the implementation of the program which is expected to take place in 2025.

“Nam Sung told me that KOICA will support Timor-Leste’s land greener plan, but, as I said, first we have to have a good plan in place before implementing the program,” Gusmão added.

Nam Sung said that the South Korean government will send a team of reforestation experts to Timor-Leste to study the areas that are good for tree planting projects.

“I share with the Prime Minister Gusmão, the success story of South Korea’s reforestation projects over the past five decades. The reforestation program has helped us preserve our mountains and keep them green. So we want to support Timor-Leste with our experience to make this country even greener,” said Minister Nam Sung.

Planting more trees will contribute to the government’s land restoration, reforestation, and afforestation plan.
