DILI, 31 january 2024 (TATOLI) – Since the beginning of this month, the health authorities have registered 147 cases of dengue fever, 52 of which were diagnosed in the last few days, according to data from the National Institute of Public Health of the Ministry of Health.
According to date of the MoH, of the 147 cases, 54 cases recorded in Dili, 34 in Baucau, 31 in Bobonaro, 14 in Liquica, six in Manufahi, four in Manatuto, three in Lautem, and one in Viqueque.
With regard to chikungunya infection, MoH reported that there were 88 cases in Dili, 81 in Ermera, 14 in Liquica, seven in Lautem, and five in Bobonaro. One case of Zika has been reported in Ermera.
Dengue fever causes a high fever — 104 F (40 C) — and any of the following signs and symptoms: headache; muscle, bone or joint pain; nausea; vomiting; pain behind the eyes, swollen glands and rash.
Severe dengue happens when the blood vessels become damaged and leaky. And the number of clot-forming cells (platelets) in the bloodstream drops. This can lead to shock, internal bleeding, organ failure and even death.
