DILI, 02 january 2024 (TATOLI) – The President of the Republic, Jose Ramos Horta, proposes the Education on Human Fraternity for World Peace and Living Together to be included in the National School Curriculum.
President Horta asked for a decree-law to be approved for the institutionalization of the Education on Human Fraternity for World Peace and Living Together to be included school curriculum.
In a meeting between Deputy Chief of Staff Henriqueta Maria da Silva, representing the Presidency, and Minister of Education Dulce de Jesus Soares discussed the initiatives proposed by the Head of State regarding Human Fraternity and the holding of the International Festival this year.
‘First, the President hopes to see a decree-law passed to institutionalize a document on Human Fraternity into the national school curriculum, starting at the pre-school level. This would promote values of mutual understanding and harmony in the nation,” said Minister Dulce.
She said: “The Human Fraternity document is important not only for students but also for teachers as well. The Ministry is ready to collaborate with the Presidency and relevant partners to accelerate this process.”
“Second, the President wants to see greater efforts to teach students about Timor-Leste’s struggle for independence, to promote respect for the nation’s founders and development,” Dulce added.
Finally, discussions were held about plans for the International Festival to be held from august 15th to september 15th, which will promote sports, culture, science and technology. The festival aims to showcase these important sectors to the world and promote Timor-Leste’s potential.
The meeting reflects the President’s continued commitment to education and social development in Timor-Leste.
The Document on Human Fraternity for World Peace and Living Together is a joint statement signed by Pope Francis of the Catholic Church and Sheikh Ahmed el-Tayeb, Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, on february 4, 2019, in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
In september 2022, President Horta and the Deputy Prime Minister of the Vatican, Archbishop Edger Pena Parra, launched Timor-Leste’s Center of Human Fraternity for World Peace and Living Together, at the Presidential Palace.
The establishment of the center aims to promote peace and living together in the country.
