DILI, 07 february 2024 (TATOLI) – Prime Minister, Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão will attend the 4th ASEAN-Australia Summit to be held in Melbourne, Australia from 4 to 6 march.

Anthony Albanese, Prime Minister of Australia, will host the Special Summit to celebrate 50 years since Australia became ASEAN’s first Dialogue Partner. It is the second time Australia will host leaders of ASEAN Member States, and in 2024 they will be joined by the leader of Timor-Leste.

“Prime Minister Gusmão himself will attend the summit in Melbourne, where he will meet different leaders from ASEAN member states and Australia,” said Rangel.

She emphasized that Timor-Leste’s presence at the Summit is important to reassure its commitment to join ASEAN by 2025 and strengthen bilateral relations with ASEAN countries and Australia.

Rangel said that the Government of Australia is always committed to supporting Timor-Leste’s bid for ASEAN membership through various programs, including the Partnership for Inclusive Prosperity program (PROSIVU).

“We thank the Australian government and ASEAN member states for their support to Timor-Leste in fulfilling its roadmap criteria towards ASEAN membership,” she added.

The ASEAN-Australia Special Commemorative Summit in Melbourne next month marks 50 years of dialogue relations and follows the Sydney meeting in March 2018 where leaders reaffirmed their commitment to ASEAN centrality and regional cooperation. At the summit, leaders will review their achievements since 2018.
