DILI, 22 february 2024 (TATOLI) – Francisco da Costa Monteiro, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources of Timor-Leste participated in the prestigious Egypt Petroleum Show (EGYPES) 2024, held under the patronage of Abdel Fattah El Sisi, President of the Arab Republic of Egypt.
The event, themed ‘Driving Energy Transition, Security and Decarbonization,’ took place from february 19 to 21, 2024, in Cairo, Egypt.
During his address in the panel discussion on “Securing Sustainable Affordable Energy for All,” Minister Francisco Monteiro shared Timor-Leste’s perspective on the challenges and opportunities in securing energy and ensuring its affordability and sustainability.
Monteiro emphasized the importance of weighing choices carefully and adopting new technologies to decarbonize the oil and gas sector.
He said that that the energy mix in Timor-Leste is currently dominated by hydrocarbons and the role of natural gas, but the country is looking towards a future where solar energy and other means of renewable energy can play a significant role.
Minister Monteiro also discussed the country’s efforts in legislating mining activities, categorizing strategic and critical minerals to maximize benefits across the value chain. He explained that the aim is to develop the industry from extraction to refining and industrialization, ensuring sustainable growth and economic prosperity.
The participation of Minister Monteiro in EGYPES 2024 underscores Timor-Leste’s commitment to engaging with international partners and stakeholders in addressing the global energy transition and exploring avenues for sustainable development.
Timor-Leste and Egypt explore opportunities for Cooperation in Oil and Gas Industries
In a meeting between Francisco da Costa Monteiro, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources of Timor-Leste, and Tarek El-Molla, Egypt’s Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, at the EGYPES 2024, the two ministers discussed ways to support cooperation in the oil and gas industries.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of the Egypt Petroleum Show (EGYPES) 2024, held in Cairo, Egypt.
During the meeting, the ministers explored potential areas of collaboration, including the exchange of expertise and best practices in the oil and gas sector. A key focus was the invitation extended to Timor-Leste’s national oil company, TIMOR GAP, E.P., to explore opportunities for cooperation and shared knowledge with Egyptian counterparts.
Minister Monteiro expressed his appreciation for the invitation and highlighted the importance of such collaborations in enhancing the capacity and capabilities of Timor-Leste’s oil and gas industry.
The meeting underscores the commitment of both nations to foster bilateral relations and mutual cooperation in the energy sector, paving the way for future collaborations that will benefit both countries.
