DILI, 24 february 2024 (TATOLI) – The President of the Republic, Jose Ramos Horta is going to sign the treaty formalizing Timor-Leste’s accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO), on monday (26/02), in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
“In Abu Dhabi, President Horta leads a Timor-Leste delegation for the signing of the treaty formalizing Timor-Leste’s accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO) at the WTO’s 13th Ministerial Conference,” said in a statement.
Timor-Leste will officially become a full member of the WTO following the signing ceremony.
In his remarks, President Ramos-Horta will emphasize Timor-Leste’s commitment to utilizing WTO membership to improve infrastructure, human capital, and administrative capacity to accelerate economic growth and diversification.
“Learning from the experiences of other Least Developed Country Members, we strongly believe our membership will drive economic reforms and serve as our commitment to creating a systematic rules-based framework,” said President Horta.
Timor-Leste’s WTO membership marks a major step towards liberalizing trade, integrating itself into the global economy, and facilitating access to international markets.
Horta requested the WTO’s continued technical assistance and capacity building post-accession to enable reforms aligned with WTO principles.
