DILI, 01 march 2024 (TATOLI) – President of the People’s Republic of Laos, fully supports Timor-Leste’s accession to ASEAN in 2025.
Laos’ commitment to supporting Timor-Leste’s accession to ASEAN was conveyed during the President Horta’s state visit to Laos, last week.
The Head of State informed that the purpose of this State visit to the People’s Republic of Laos is to negotiate Timor-Leste’s accession to ASEAN.
Horta said that this year, the People’s Republic of Laos chairs the ASEAN presidency, therefore Timor-Leste needs to make strong promotions to gain confidence from ASEAN Member States.
“They all support us, we have good strong relations with Laos, just as no other country wants to destroy our friendship, they support and respect us and they are happy with my visit, the President of Laos also wants to visit Timor-Leste, as well as other ASEAN countries like the Philippines, Brunei, among others,” the Head of State said in a statement.
Horta said the People’s Republic of Laos fully supports Timor-Leste’s accession according to the plan to formalize joining ASEAN in 2025.
Horta asked the Government to evaluate the ‘Road Map’ given by ASEAN to Timor-Leste to prepare the country’s economy.
The Head of State said that during his meeting with the President of Laos, Thongloun Sisoulith, there was a good response for Timor-Leste’s accession to the organization, stating that Thongloun Sisoulith intends to visit Timor-Leste soon.
