DILI, 19 march 2024 (TATOLI) – Timorese journalists attended a three-day first aid training organized by the Timor-Leste Red Cross (TLRC) from 19 to 21 march 2024.

The first aid training was organized due to the collaboration between TLRC and the Timor-Leste Press Council (CITL).

The training aims to improve the skills, knowledge, and confidence of each journalist to provide first aid and response to emergencies. Providing immediate assistance is critical to save lives in critical scenarios.

The representative of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), João Martins Alves, said that journalists play an important role in reporting on humanitarian issues, saying reporters therefore need basic knowledge and skills in first aid.

“In some situations, journalists also take part in emergency situations, such as the war in Gaza and Ukraine, where reporters cover the war but can also provide first aid,” said Martins.

In addition, TLRC Representative, Isabel Fernandes thanked the ICRC for supporting the first aid training for journalists.

She encouraged journalists to take advantage of this opportunity to acquire knowledge and skills on first aid.

“Many accidents occur in the country in the country, therefore we need knowledge and skills to save lives,” said Fernandes.

Aniceto da Silva Dias, a journalist from Lafaek News, said he would apply the knowledge and skills he learned during the three-day training to help support others and save lives.
