PORT MORESBY, 12 april 2024 (TATOLI) – The Chief Electoral Commission of the Papua New Guinea (PNG), Simon Sinai will represent The Group of Seven Plus (g7+) to observe the upcoming general elections in the Solomon Islands.
The General elections will be held on 17 april 2024 to determine the composition of the 12th Parliament. The previous election was held on 3 april 2019 following the amendments to the Electoral Act in 2018.
At a meeting on 10 april in PNG’s capital Port Moresby, Helder da Costa, Secretary General of the g7+ Secretariat, asked Simon Sinai to represent g7+ in observing the upcoming general elections in Solomon Islands.
During the meeting, the g7+ delegation, led by Helder da Costa, and the Papua New Guinea Electoral Commission team, led by Simon Sinai, also exchanged views on organizing elections based on democratic law.
“We have a bilateral meeting with the Head of the Electoral Commission of Papua New Guinea, Simon Sinai, who will lead the g7+ delegation to observe the general elections in the Solomon Islands on 17 april,” Costa said after the meeting at the CNE hall, in Port Moresby, on wednesday.
Sinai was honored for the trust put in him to observe the elections: “It’s an honor for me as I am trusted by g7+ to lead the team in observing the election in one of the Pacific island countries. I am ready to collaborate with the team to observe the elections.”
The g7+ has observed a number of elections in several g7+ countries, including Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Guinea-Bissau.
The g7+, established in 2010, is an intergovernmental voluntary organization bringing together nations that are either facing active conflict or have recent experience of conflict and fragility.
