Stadium of Gleno and Dili ready to host upcoming CPLP games

DILI, 19 april 2024 (TATOLI) – The Gleno Stadium in Ermera Municipality and Dili Stadium will host the 2025 Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP) Games, which will take from july 17 to 27.

The team led by the Sports Coordinator of Minister of Youth, Sports, Art and Culture (MoYSAC), Jorge Carvalho, accompanied by António da Luz, a member of the technical committee of the CPLP Games,  made the announcement after inspecting the sports infrastructure in Timor-Leste.

Carvalho, said that the team’s main mission is to inspect the condition of the current sport infrastructure and the possible need for rehabilitation, stating that the country has the opportunity to host the game: “Therefore, investment in sports infrastructure is necessary.”

The CPLP is multi-sport event involving all the member states of the organization. Although the concept is similar to that of the Lusophone Games, only athletes under the age of 16 are allowed to take part in this competition. The competition aims to strengthen solidarity between the citizens of the participating countries.

Among the sports disciplines already played in the CPLP Sports Games are handball, athletics, athletics for people with disabilities, basketball, soccer, tennis, and beach volleyball.

The competition, which began in 1992, was first held in Portugal. Since then there have been 11 editions, two in Portugal, Cape Verde, Angola, and Mozambique and one in Guinea-Bissau, Brazil, and São Tomé and Príncipe.
