DILI, 30 april 2024 (TATOLI) – Ambassador Lurdes Bessa, the Permanent Representative of Timor-Leste to the UN and other international organizations in Geneva, awarded by President of the Republic, José Ramos-Horta, with the Colar of the Order of Timor-Leste and a certificate of recognition, acknowledging her outstanding work to the country’s process of accession to the WTO.
Similarly, Excellency the Permanent Representative of Portugal to the UN and other international organizations in Geneva, Rui Macieira, was also awarded with the Colar of the Order of Timor-Leste and a certificate of recognition, by President of the Republic, José Ramos-Horta, for his contribution and dedication to Timor-Leste’s WTO accession.
Lurdes Bessa’s award is in recognition of her fundamental role in the United Nations Office and other organizations in Geneva, Switzerland, where she has always shown exemplary dedication and professionalism in promoting the country’s interests.
Rui Macieira’s award is a way of recognizing his contribution as Chairman of the Working Group for Timor-Leste’s accession to the World Trade Organization, as well as his role in bilateral negotiations, supporting the country’s bilateral and multilateral negotiations for WTO membership.
In addition, the Head of State also decorated Moisés de Deus, author of the song “Por Ti, Timor” with the rank of Insignia, and Nuno Antunes, lawyer and legal advisor for the petroleum sector, with the Medal of Merit and certificate of recognition.
In his speech, President Horta paid tribute to the significant contributions of each honoree.
The prestigious ceremony honoring distinguished individuals was held at the Embassy of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste in Belém, Lisbon, Portugal, presided over by President Horta. The event celebrated the influential roles played by six people, three Timorese and three foreigners, in supporting Timor-Leste’s development and sovereignty.
The ceremony served as a strong declaration of Timor-Leste’s enduring gratitude to those who have fiercely advocated for the progress of this young nation, reinforcing President Horta’s commitment to recognizing impactful service.
