Horta praises Sultan of Brunei for his contribution to maintaining peace in the region

DILI, 20 may 2024 (TATOLI) – On the occasion of the 22nd National Day of Restoration of Independence of Timor-Leste, the President of the Republic, Jose Ramos Horta organized a State Banquet to honor Sultan of Brunei, Haji Hassanal Bolkiah.

In his speech welcoming the Sultan at the banquet, President Horta expressed his deep gratitude to Brunei for its immense support and solidarity with Timor-Leste during its nation-building efforts since the restoration of independence in 2002.

He praised Brunei under the Sultan’s leadership, as he is a “steadfast and wise leader,” which serves as an example of peace, stability, and well-being in the region.

The Head of State thanked the Sultan for Brunei’s generous support for Timor-Leste’s regional integration and pursuit to become a full member of ASEAN.

He declared his great hope that this State Visit would mark the beginning of high-level exchanges to strengthen the fraternal cooperation between the two nations.

While acknowledging development gaps, Horta stated that the two nations share the status of being the smallest ASEAN members and face similar common challenges and opportunities.

Horta expressed his commitment to expand bilateral relations in strategic sectors such as tourism, education, health, transportation, industry, agriculture, fisheries, forestry, farming and environmental protection.

Horta congratulated the Sultan’s compassionate leadership which has ensured Brunei’s harmony and prosperity for many years. He elevated Brunei as an example of peace and fraternity amid global uncertainty.

The President voiced his hope to work jointly on green and blue economic opportunities aligned with ASEAN and COP28 objectives. He thanked the Bruneian Ambassador for his untiring efforts to further strengthen our bilateral relations.

The State Banquet toasted to the two nations having an even better friendship relationship with the Sultan’s health and longer duration as the respected leader of the people of Brunei.
