DILI, 01 june 2024 (TATOLI) – Addressing the Shangri-La Dialogue security summit, President of the Republic, Jose Ramos Horta celebrated Timor-Leste’s living in peace with neighbors Indonesia and Australia. However, he expressed grave concerns about catastrophic wars raging in places like Myanmar, Gaza, Ukraine, Afghanistan, and Sudan.

Horta questioned whether political and military leaders have learned sufficiently from past conflicts and failures to prevent wars like those in Afghanistan and Ukraine.

He proposed diverting 50% of Asia’s military budgets and personnel over 10 years to civilian efforts like construction, schools, health clinics, and environmental projects to meet development goals and reduce poverty.

On the ongoing conflicts, the Head of State urged parties to agree to at least 6-month humanitarian pauses to allow caring for casualties, reuniting families, and restarting schools and economies while mediators work on peace deals.

Horta stressed Timor-Leste faces no major threats, saying “We are friends of all, enemies of no one.”

The Head of State called for strengthening regional and global conflict prevention mechanisms.

He said the South China Sea should ideally be a “Zone of Peace and Fraternity” without military installations.
