DILI, 11 june 2024 (TATOLI) – President Horta and the Finnish Ambassador to Timor-Leste exchange views on strengthening ties and identify areas for future cooperation.
The President of the Republic, Jose Ramos Horta met with Finland’s non-resident Ambassador to Timor-Leste, Pakka Kailhilahti, at the Nicolau Lobato Presidential Palace today.
In an interview after the meeting, Ambassador Kailhilahti said they exchanged views on current global issues and situations.
Kailhilahti expressed appreciation for Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão’s participation at the recent Geneva Peace Conference in Ukraine, noting Timor-Leste’s perspectives aligned with those of very small and very large countries on many points.
Ambassador Kailhilahti said another key aspect was discussing Timor-Leste’s economic and development outlook with government officials: “Finland aims to identify areas for cooperation, support, and potential business opportunities in this young nation.”
Kailhilahti said that the meeting opened up more opportunities for collaboration not just between Finland and Timor-Leste bilaterally, but also potentially involving Germany and the broader European Union.
The President of the Republic appreciated Ambassador Kailhilahti’s visit and welcomed strengthening ties with European partners.
