DILI, 17 june 2024 (TATOLI) – The President of the Republic, Jose Ramos Horta congratulates Muslims in Timor-Leste on the Eid al-Adha Islamic holiday, also known as the Festival of Sacrifice.

“Dear Muslim Brothers and Sisters in Timor-Leste. On behalf of the people of Timor-Leste, I extend my warmest wishes to you all on this joyous occasion of Eid al-Adha 2024,” President Horta said in a statement.

The Head of State said: “Eid al-Adha serves as a reminder of the profound lessons we can learn from the story of Prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son in obedience to God’s command. It is a time to reflect on the values of selflessness, devotion, and the strength of our convictions.”

On the celebration of Eid al-Adha Day, Horta acknowledges the invaluable contributions of Timor-Leste’s Muslims to the rich tapestry of Timor-Leste’s society: “Your commitment to faith, family, and community has played a vital role in shaping our nation’s identity and fostering a spirit of unity and understanding.”

“As we celebrate this joyous occasion, let us also reaffirm our commitment to religious harmony and mutual respect. In Timor-Leste, we take pride in our diversity and the peaceful coexistence of various faiths. May this Eid al-Adha further strengthen the bonds of brotherhood and sisterhood among all citizens, irrespective of their religious beliefs,” stressed Horta. “During this time of celebration, let us also remember those who are less fortunate and extend our support and compassion to them. The true essence of Eid al-Adha lies in sharing our blessings and bringing joy to the lives of others.”

The President also conveyed his warmest wishes to all those celebrating Eid al-Adha with happiness, peace, and prosperity: “May the spirit of Eid al-Adha bring joy, unit, and spiritual fulfillment to Muslims across Timor-Leste and around the world. Eid Mubarak!” Horta concluded.

Eid Al-Adha is one of the two official holidays celebrated within Islam (the other being Eid al-Fitr). It honors the willingness of Abraham to sacrifice his son Ishmael as an act of obedience to God’s command.
