DILI, 03 july 2024 (TATOLI) – Today, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) reaffirmed its commitment to supporting trade in Timor-Leste by supporting the Customs Authority (CA) and the Timor-Leste Business Women Association (AEMTL) to organize a Trade Talk event at Timor Plaza. The event brought together 80 members of Timor-Leste’s trading community to enhance their understanding of trade processes. The event offered a platform for participants to engage directly with representatives from the CA and AEMTL.

A key event theme was USAID’s dedication to inclusivity, particularly in empowering minority groups and women. The AEMTL was recognized for promoting women’s participation in the private sector, contributing significantly to economic sustainability and job creation.

“We are deeply invested in the broader trading community and are committed to supporting the diverse and inclusive growth of Timor-Leste’s economy,” the USAID Mission Director, Robert Barton said. “Our partnership with organizations like AEMTL ensures that women and minority groups have the opportunities and support needed to thrive in the business sector.”

The event featured discussions on the opportunities presented by Timor-Leste’s journey towards ASEAN accession and the implementation of World Trade  Organization (WTO) agreements. Participants shared insights on how these developments can enhance competitiveness and create new markets for Timorese products.

USAID emphasized its long-term commitment to Timor-Leste’s development, focusing on enhancing the efficiency and transparency of trade processes in alignment with the Customs Authority’s slogan, “Helping to make trade faster, simpler and fairer.” USAID’s support has been pivotal in the country’s efforts to implement various WTO-related agreements and work towards ASEAN accession.

USAID’s support for Timor-Leste is part of a broader effort to foster sustainable economic growth and development in the region. USAID will continue to provide the necessary resources and expertise to help Timor-Leste achieve its trade facilitation goals. The USAID supported the Trade Talk event through the USAID/Timor-Leste Trade Governance Activity.

The event opened with a tribute to the late Commissioner, Mr. Jose Antonio Fatima Abilio, whose visionary leadership significantly contributed to the advancements in Timor-Leste’s customs and trade systems. “Commissioner Abilio was a true champion for change, and his dedication to improving trade systems was unparalleled,” said the USAID Mission Director, Robert Barton.
