DILI, 11 july 2024 (TATOL) – The Ombudsman for Human Rights and Justice of Timor-Leste (PDHJ) on thursday hosted the second Technical Working Group Meeting of the Southeast Asian National Human Rights Institutions Forum (SEANF) in Dili.
According to the Ombudsman for Human Rights and Justice, Virgílio Guterres, the event aims to promote dialogue on the protection and defense of human rights.
“This meeting will allow us to come up with recommendations on the promotion and protection of human rights to be presented at the next annual meeting in November,” he said at the Hotel Timor in Dili.
Guterres said that the representatives of the Human Rights Commission of ASEAN would discuss the possibility of setting up a regional commission of inquiry on the protection of human rights.
He also stressed that the meeting will provide an opportunity for local NGOs, such as Rede ba Rai, to share experiences on resolving land disputes.
Guterres added that topics such as the importance of cooperation between ASEAN member states, the defense of human and consumer rights, and the Myanmar conflict will also be discussed.
The meeting was attended by representatives of local NGOs, as well as representatives of the Human Rights Commission of Indonesia, Thailand, Myanmar, and the Philippines.
