DILI, 31 august 2024 (TATOLI) – General Secretary of the Revolutionary Front for the Liberation of Independence (Fretilin) party Bim Amude Mari Alkatiri met with United Nations (UN) General Secretary António Guterres and former Protugal Prime Minister José Manuel Durão Barroso as friends to discuss various issues in developing Timor-Leste.

The meeting was held on 31 august at the Timor Hotel, Colmera, Dili.

“I conducted a courtesy visit and as a friend too, therefore I came to meet with my two homologues, Dorão Barroso, who at that time served as Minister of Foreign Affairs of Portugal, and at that time he also started the negotiation process with Indonesia and then became the Prime Minister of Portugal, who continued to support the independence process of Timor-Leste at that time, and after that became the President of the European Union Commission to continue to support the economy of our country, Timor-Leste”.

“At the same place I also had a meeting with the UN General Secretary, António Guterres, a politician of the Socialist Party in Portugal. Before becoming Prime Minister, we also often met to discuss the independence process of Timor-Leste at that time, and today we met to discuss various issues,” Alkatiri said.

Alkatiri explained that the UN General Secretary came to Timor-Leste to attend the 25th Anniversary of the Popular Consultation; therefore, this meeting discussed the international situation and also briefly discussed the national situation in Timor-Leste.

According to UN General Secretary António Guterres, he wanted to find a solution to the problems faced by Timor-Leste, so he asked for a meeting to understand each other.

“I said we should all talk about a platform intended, but I avoid talking about that problem; therefore, I leave it to real history and let history determine who has a reason and who has no reason,” he concluded.
