DILI, 05 september 2024 (TATOLI)- The draft legal decree project, which was submitted by Dulce de Jesus Soares, the Minister of Education, to update the National Basic Curriculum for Primary Education Third Cycle—which covers the seventh, eighth, and ninth school years—was approved by the Council of Ministers of the Government of Timor-Leste.

According to the government’s official website, the 2011 replacement curriculum’s goal is to modernize and unify primary education in order to deliver a high-quality education that is in line with current demands.

Its primary goals are to advance scientific and linguistic knowledge while also enhancing critical-thinking abilities, creativity, communication, and an understanding of cultural traditions.

“Noteworthy is the introduction of the discipline with three subjects, namely, human brotherhood, morals, and ethics, inspired by the teachings of Pope Francis and the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, to promote peace and harmonious coexistence,’ the official website said.

This curriculum’s adoption will promote multicultural inclusion while introducing cutting-edge concepts like digital literacy and physical and mental well-being.

Schools will be allowed to modify the curriculum in accordance with local needs while adhering to the guiding principles.

Upon finishing this cycle, it is hoped that students will possess advanced scientific knowledge, be able to actively participate in society, preserve the customs that define Timorese identity, and develop critical thinking skills to solve problems and make responsible, wise decisions.
