National Parliament approves UN Convention on Sea Law

DILI, 17 september 2024 (TATOLI) – The National Parliament, on tuesday, discussed and approved Draft Resolution no. 9/VI(1st) – Ratifying the Agreement under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) on the conservation and sustainable use of marine diversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction.

A total of 63 National Parliament members unanimously approved the resolution with 63 votes in favor, 0 against and 0 abstentions.

Last month, Council of Ministers approved the draft resolution for the ratification of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

The UNCLOS’s main functions are to promote the peaceful use of the seas, regulate the use of marine resources, and promote the conservation of living resources and the preservation of the marine environment.

The ratification of this Agreement will strengthen Timor-Leste’s commitment to the protection of the marine environment and global biodiversity, promoting the conservation and sustainable use of the oceans.
