DILI, 10 October 2024 (TATOLI)—Today, the Government of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, represented by the Minister of Planning and Strategic Investment, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Minister of National Development Planning/the National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas) of the Republic of Indonesia concerning development cooperation.
The MoU signed by Minister Gastão Francisco de Sousa and Minister Suharso Monoarfa, establishes a framework for collaboration on various development aspects towards achieving the both countries’ national development priorities and the sustainable development targets such as infrastructure, human capital, economy and sustainable development. The scope of the cooperation covers transportation, clean energy, education and vocational training, trade and investment, climate change mitigation, and digital transformation.
“Indonesia and Timor-Leste have a very close relationship in various aspects, both in history, economy and culture, making the relationship between the two countries very special. This cooperation is based on the principles of equality, mutual respect, and mutual benefits. We believe that by working together, we can achieve our respective development priorities more effectively and inclusively. We hope that through cooperation in infrastructure, clean energy, sustainable development, and various other sectors, we can create a real impact that will be felt by the people of both countries. Hopefully this collaboration will continue to grow and provide the greatest benefits for the progress of our nation” said Minister Gastão de Sousa in a statement.
Both ministers emphasize the importance of cooperation for sustainable development based on the principle mutual respect and shared benefits, and open up opportunities for collaboration on exchanging information, expertise and sharing of best-practices.
“The MoU will be a framework for strategic development cooperation for both countries to support the achievement of development priorities and targets in accordance with development priorities in both countries, especially in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In the MoU, both countries open up space for development collaboration/cooperation in various sectors, in various forms such as, among others, information exchange and sharing of best-practice experiences, capacity building, technical cooperation, and research cooperation” expressed by Minister Suharso Monoarfa.
The signing of this MoU marks a significant milestone in the deepening bilateral relationship between Timor-Leste and Indonesia. It is expected to contribute to the economic development, social progress, and overall well-being of both countries.
