DILI, 21 november 2024 (TATOLI)— Timor-Leste continued the trend of recent years in the fight against corruption, climbing to 70th place (last year it ranked 77th) in the Corruption Perception Index (CPI).
The Commissaries Anti-Corruption Commission (CAC), Rui Pereira dos Santos, said index perception of corruption in Timor-Leste stayed at number 70 among 180 countries.
“Timor-Leste ranking to index Corruption perception at 70 between 180 countries,” the Commissary of CAC, Rui Pereira dos Santos, told journalists in his office, Farol, this thursday.
Pereira added that the Timor-Leste Corruption Index is not bad and not worse, but we are in a good step for corruption prevention and combating corruption. Anti-corruption institutions play by the rules.
He added Timor-Leste is a country aligned with the United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC). It required CAC institutions to affirm Timor-Leste’s promise to combat corruption.
The commissary said the perception rank of corruption in Timor-Leste continued to stay at 70 positions because it was one and a half years that CAC did not function well in its duty.
The CAC Commissary swore in last july; however, some effort has been made by the CAC.
“Talking about the prevention and combat of corruption in Timor-Leste, this stage is showing good progress, as we have legislation laws MPCC number 7/2020 that help us to combat and prevent corruption,” he concluded.
