DILI, 28 november 2024 (TATOLI) – Indonesian Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin, representing Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, participated in the celebration of the 49th anniversary of the Proclamation of Independence Day in Oé-Cusse.
In his speech, the President of the Republic, José Ramos Horta, highlighted the importance of the presence of the Indonesian Defense Minister and representatives of the Indonesian Armed Forces in strengthening the bonds of friendship and cooperation between the two countries.
“Your presence reflects the bonds of friendship, mutual respect and cooperation that have marked the relations between our countries in an exemplary way,” said Horta in a statement. “Your participation in this event is an eloquent testimony to the maturity of our bilateral relationship, built on the foundations of reconciliation, dialog and a shared vision of a harmonious and promising future.”
Horta said that the conflict that ravaged East Timor, with the outbreak of civil war in 1975 caused by ideological radicalization, created deep divisions that marked the history between the two countries. “These irrational differences resulted in a tragic war between brothers, with inestimable human losses and deep wounds. Indonesia is no stranger to these realities, having faced riots and episodes of violence at different times in its history.”
The Head of State stressed that Timor-Leste and Indonesia are free and democratic countries, “whose exemplary trajectories demonstrate that it is possible to overcome past conflicts and build a future of peace and cooperation. This reconciliation is a model for the world, showing that differences can be transformed into opportunities for dialog and collaboration.”
The event was attended, among others, by representatives of the Indonesian Armed Forces, General Wiranto and Lieutenant General Kiki Syahnarkri, members of the government and members of parliament.
