OE-CUSSE, 28 november 2024 (TATOLI) – In a powerful address marking Timor-Leste’s 49th Anniversary of Independence, the President of the Republic, Jose Ramos-Horta emphasized national unity and international cooperation, highlighting the country’s remarkable journey of reconciliation with Indonesia.
Speaking at the celebration in Oecusse, the President welcomed Indonesian representatives, including Defence Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin, symbolizing the transformed relationship between the two nations that were once in conflict.
The speech outlined significant diplomatic and economic achievements for 2024, including visits from international dignitaries like Pope Francis and leaders from various countries, as well as strategic investments in shipbuilding, solar energy, and infrastructure. Ramos-Horta also looked forward to Timor-Leste’s anticipated full ASEAN membership in 2025, which would provide access to a market of 700 million people and over 3 trillion US dollars in economic opportunity.
Domestically, the President addressed critical challenges facing the nation, including the need to diversify the economy beyond oil and gas, improve education and healthcare, combat corruption, and develop infrastructure in border regions. He stressed the importance of sustainable development, food sovereignty, and investing in sectors that can provide opportunities for youth.
Looking to the future, Ramos-Horta expressed hope for global peace and dialogue, particularly referencing the potential for renewed international relations under new leadership. He called on Timorese citizens to work together in building a better country, emphasizing the national reconciliation policy as a model for fostering unity and friendship.
