DILI, 03 december 2024 (TATOLI) – At the National Seminar commemorating 20 years of Global Fund support, President of the Republic, Jose Ramos Horta unveiled the remarkable health transformation of Timor-Leste, highlighting a cumulative investment of $108,639,978 that has strategically targeted critical health challenges. The fund’s targeted allocations include $41,070,951 for malaria, $28,387,525 for HIV, $30,946,122 for tuberculosis, $2,735,587 for health system strengthening (RSSH), and $5,499,792 for COVID-19 response.

Timor-Leste has achieved extraordinary milestones in combating infectious diseases. In malaria control, the country reached a pivotal moment by recording zero malaria deaths in 2016 and transitioning from disease control to elimination phase. The HIV response has been equally impressive, with the country developing an ambitious National Strategic Plan for HIV, Hepatitis, and STI (2022-26), while scaling up testing, treatment, and Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP). Tuberculosis efforts have been equally transformative, with TB-related deaths dropping by 55% since 2015 and the implementation of advanced diagnostic technologies and integrated surveillance systems.

President Ramos-Horta emphasized the Global Fund’s role beyond mere financial support, highlighting how the investments have fundamentally restructured Timor-Leste’s healthcare infrastructure. The comprehensive approach has not only saved lives but also empowered local healthcare systems, trained medical professionals, and created sustainable health management practices that contribute to the nation’s broader social and economic development.

Looking forward, Timor-Leste stands as a testament to what can be achieved through international cooperation and targeted health interventions. The progress made over two decades demonstrates the potential of collaborative global health strategies in transforming national health landscapes, offering hope and a model for other developing nations in their fight against infectious diseases.
